Does Medicare Pay for Stair Lifts?

Editorial policy
  • Original Medicare Part B covers durable medical equipment, not home modifications.
  • A stair lift is attached to the home, which is why it falls outside that definition.
  • Some Medicare Advantage plans offer a modest annual home-modification allowance.
  • Medicaid waivers and VA grants are the more realistic funding paths.

Why the classification matters

Durable medical equipment must be usable in the home, primarily medical in nature, and not useful to someone without an illness or injury. Because a stair lift is permanently attached to the structure and benefits the home generally, it does not meet that test — no matter who prescribes it.

What Medicare does cover nearby

Wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, patient lifts, and commode chairs are typically covered as durable medical equipment when medically necessary. If the need is transfer assistance rather than stair travel, some of that equipment may address it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Medicare Advantage cover stair lifts?

Some plans include supplemental home-modification benefits, often a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars annually. Coverage varies by plan and county; call the plan directly and ask about home modifications by name.
