Getting a Wheelchair Through Narrow Doorways

Most tight doorways can be solved with two inches and an hour of labor. The rest is geometry — measure the chair, the approach, and the clear opening before buying anything.

Measure the clear opening, not the door

A door sold as '32 inches' rarely gives 32 inches of passage. The door slab sits inside the frame and the stops sit on top of it, so the usable gap is the door open at a right angle, measured from the face of the open door to the stop on the opposite side. That clear opening is the only number that decides whether a chair fits. Measure it with a tape before you price anything.

  1. Open the door fully and stand it at about 90 degrees to the frame.
  2. Measure from the face of the door slab to the edge of the stop on the far side.
  3. Note the threshold height too — a tall lip can stop a chair even when the width is fine.
  4. Walk the approach: if the chair has to turn into the door, mark how much hallway it has to pivot in.

Try the cheap fixes before framing

A surprising number of tight doorways are fixed by hardware, not carpentry. Try these in order, because each is cheaper than the next and none commits you to a remodel.

  1. Remove the door entirely where privacy is not needed — a closet, pantry, or laundry. The opening usually clears immediately.
  2. Install swing-clear offset hinges so the door slab swings fully clear of the opening. This typically recovers about two inches of clear width for the cost of hardware and an hour of labor.
  3. Remove or pare back the door stop molding on the strike side. A thinner stop adds a fraction of an inch and costs almost nothing.
  4. Swap a tall threshold for a low-profile or beveled one so the wheels roll over instead of catching.
  5. Rehang the door to swing the other way if it currently opens into the chair's path. This is a labor fix, not a width fix, but it clears the approach.

Measure the clear opening again after each change. If the cheap fixes together get the chair through with a comfortable margin, you are done. If they fall short, the next step is widening the opening itself.

The approach angle is half the problem

A door that is wide enough head-on can still be impossible from a hallway that forces a turn. A wheelchair rolling straight through needs only its width, but the same chair pivoting 90 degrees into a doorway sweeps a wider arc and needs room to do it. A narrow hallway with a door on the side is the classic trap: the door is plenty wide, but there is no room to line the chair up before entering.

When the approach is the problem, the fixes are different — widening the hallway is rarely practical, but widening that specific doorway a few extra inches, or changing the door to swing the other way, can give the chair the arc it needs. An accessibility contractor or occupational therapist can assess whether the geometry works in your specific layout.

When widening is unavoidable

If the cheap fixes leave the clear opening short and the chair cannot pass, the opening itself has to grow. That means removing trim and drywall, rebuilding the rough opening, and installing a new pre-hung door — then patching, priming, and painting both sides. The cost depends almost entirely on what is in the wall.

Which doors matter most

Not every doorway needs to fit every chair. Prioritize the route from the entry to the bathroom, the bedroom, and a place to sit and eat — the daily path of use. Closet and pantry doors can stay narrow; a door the chair never passes through does not need work. Fixing the three or four doors on the daily route solves most of the problem for a fraction of doing the whole house.

  • Entry door: the first gate; sometimes a threshold ramp is the real fix, not width.
  • Bathroom door: the most important interior door — the chair must reach the toilet and shower.
  • Bedroom door: needed for independence and for emergency access.
  • Kitchen / living area: often open already, but a tight pantry or passage door can block the route.

A practical order of operations

  1. Measure the clear opening of each door on the daily route and the actual width of the chair, with margin.
  2. Walk the approach at each door and flag any that force a tight turn.
  3. Try the cheap fixes — remove the door, swap to offset hinges, reduce the stop, lower the threshold — and remeasure.
  4. If a door still does not clear, decide whether that door is on the daily route. If not, leave it.
  5. For the doors that must clear, get an accessibility contractor's assessment before framing anything; the wall type decides the cost.

The goal is not a wheelchair-accessible house in the abstract — it is a chair that reaches the bathroom, the bed, and the kitchen. Measure, fix the cheap ones, and widen only the doors that actually block the daily route.
