Aging in Place with Hearing Loss: Safer Doorbells, Alarms, and Phones
The standard smoke alarm is designed for ears that work. For someone with significant hearing loss, the whole alert layer of the home — smoke, doorbell, phone, baby monitor, weather radio — needs to be rebuilt around light and vibration.

The nighttime problem comes first
Hearing aids come out at night. A person with moderate-to-severe hearing loss may not hear a standard smoke alarm even at close range, and high-frequency alarm tones are exactly what age-related hearing loss erases first. The fix is a three-part system: interconnected smoke and CO alarms (so an alarm anywhere sounds everywhere), a strobe light unit in the bedroom, and a bed shaker under the mattress or pillow that physically wakes the person. Doorbells and knowing someone is there
Missed doorbells are an annoyance; missed knocks from a caregiver or a smoke-alerting neighbor are worse. Flashing doorbell kits put a plug-in strobe receiver in the living room and bedroom. Video doorbells add the phone dimension — the alert appears on a phone or smartwatch with a picture, which also answers the who-is-it problem. Phones that actually get used
Unanswered phones are how hearing loss quietly becomes isolation. Two fixes work in combination: an amplified phone with adjustable tone and very loud ringer (plus a flashing ringer light), and a captioned phone that displays near-real-time captions of the conversation on a screen. Captioned telephone service is federally funded through the FCC's relay program — qualifying residents typically get the captioning service free and the phone itself free or heavily subsidized through state telecommunications equipment programs. Every state has such a program; the state's deaf and hard-of-hearing services office is the entry point.
The alerts nobody thinks about
- Weather emergencies: a NOAA weather radio with strobe or pillow-shaker output, especially in tornado and hurricane regions.
- Kitchen timers and oven alerts with loud low-frequency tones plus a visual flash — or a smart display the person can see from across the room.

- Water leak and freezer alarms: audible-only alerts in the basement serve no one if the person cannot hear them upstairs; smart sensors that push phone notifications solve this.
Sound clarity in the rooms that matter
For people who still use residual hearing and hearing aids, room acoustics decide whether conversation works. Soft furnishings — curtains, rugs (secured with non-slip backing), upholstered furniture, even bookshelves — absorb the echo that makes speech smear. In practice, the kitchen and bathroom are the worst rooms: hard surfaces, extractor fans, and running water mask speech entirely. Turn off the fan, face the person, and speak at normal pace rather than shouting, which distorts the very cues hearing aids amplify.
Loop systems and TV listening
TV volume wars are the classic household symptom. The household-friendly fix is a TV listening system — wireless headphones or a neckloop that feeds the hearing aids directly — so the television runs at normal volume for everyone else. For larger spaces, a hearing loop installed in a living room feeds audio straight to hearing aids with a telecoil; the same technology used in theaters and churches, scaled to a family room.
