DIY Home Accessibility Assessment: A Room-by-Room Measuring Guide
Before you call a contractor or buy equipment, a tape measure and thirty minutes will tell you what your home actually needs. These are the numbers professionals use.

What you need
- A 25-foot tape measure.
- A notebook or your phone — one page per room.
- A level or a slope-measuring app for ramps and thresholds.
- The wheelchair or walker the person actually uses, so you can measure real widths and turning radius, not brochure numbers.
Step 1: Map the daily route
Before measuring anything, walk the actual path of a normal day: entry door → kitchen → bathroom → bedroom. Everything on that route gets measured; rooms off the route matter less. Note every step, threshold, and narrow point along the way.
Step 2: Entries and ramps
- Count the steps at every entrance and measure total rise: ground to threshold in inches.
- Divide the rise by 12 to get the minimum ramp length in feet (30 in rise = 30 ft of ramp, which usually means switchbacks).
- If the rise is over about 30 inches or yard space is short, a platform lift may be more practical than a ramp — that is a different budget category.
- Measure threshold heights inside and out; anything over 1/2 inch catches wheelchair casters and tripping feet.
Step 3: Doors and hallways
Measure clear opening width: door open 90 degrees, inside of door to edge of stop. The labeled door size (a '32-inch door') is not the clear opening — you typically lose 1.5 to 2 inches to the door slab and hinges.

Measure hallway width too — 36 inches is the working minimum, and 42–48 inches makes turning far easier. Note any doorway approached at an angle; a 32-inch door on a narrow hallway can be unusable at any width.
Step 4: Bathroom
- Clear floor space: can a 30 x 48 inch rectangle sit in front of the toilet and shower? Is there a 60-inch turning circle anywhere?
- Toilet height: floor to top of seat. Under 17 inches is low for someone with weak legs; 17–19 inches is comfort height.
- Toilet clearance: distance from the toilet centerline to each wall — 18 inches per side is the accessible target.
- Shower: curb height, interior dimensions (36 x 36 in minimum for a transfer shower, 36 x 60 in for roll-in), and whether the walls have blocking for grab bars.
- Sink: knee clearance underneath if seated use is likely (27 in high, 30 in wide, roughly 11–25 in deep).
Step 5: Stairs
- Tread depth (front to back): 11 inches or more is safe footing; under 9 is a fall hazard.
- Riser height consistency: measure every step — one odd riser causes trips.
- Handrails: present on both sides? Do they run the full flight and extend slightly past the top and bottom steps?
- Stair width if a lift is ever considered: 36 inches is a common minimum, and note any turns or landings (curved rails cost far more).
Step 6: Bedroom and general safety
- Bed height: floor to top of mattress. The person's feet should rest flat with knees near 90 degrees when sitting on the edge — often 20–23 inches total.
- Path width beside the bed for a walker or wheelchair (36 in is workable).
- Lighting: can the person reach a switch or lamp from bed? Are nightlights on the route to the bathroom?
- Floor surfaces: note every loose rug, transition strip, and slick floor on the daily route.
When to bring in a professional
A DIY assessment identifies the problems; an occupational therapist home evaluation identifies which ones matter most for a specific person's abilities. If the person has a progressive condition, recent falls, or uses a wheelchair full-time, the OT assessment is usually worth its cost before any money goes to construction.
Frequently asked questions
What is the single most important measurement?
Clear door width on the daily route. It is the cheapest to fix (often just hinges), the most commonly wrong, and the one that decides whether a wheelchair plan works at all.
Are these numbers the same as the ADA requirements?
They are based on the same accessibility standards (32-inch clear openings, 1:12 ramp slope, 60-inch turning space), but the ADA applies to public buildings, not private homes. Treat the numbers as well-tested targets, not legal obligations — though local codes may adopt some of them for permitted work.
How long does a DIY assessment take?
About 30 to 60 minutes for a typical single-story home, longer with stairs or multiple bathrooms. Measure once, carefully — these numbers feed every quote and purchase that follows.
What should I do with the results?
Prioritize fixes on the daily route: entries first (getting in and out is non-negotiable), then the bathroom, then doors and lighting. Bring the numbers to contractors when comparing quotes, and use them when shopping for ramps, grab bars, and lifts.
