Editorial policy
  • Lighting and flooring changes deliver the most safety per dollar.
  • Bathroom access is the highest-value single project.
  • Do the small things first; they build agreement for the larger ones.
  • Involve the parent in every decision, or the equipment will not be used.

The ranked list

Ordered by benefit per dollar, based on where falls actually occur and what our reviewers see abandoned unused.

  • Night lighting on the bed-to-bathroom path
  • Removing loose rugs and fixing floor transitions
  • Grab bars anchored into structure at the shower and toilet
  • Handrails on both sides of every staircase
  • A shower that can be entered without stepping over a wall
  • A step-free entrance at one door
  • A stair solution if bedrooms or bathrooms are upstairs

How to raise it

Lead with the goal, not the risk. "I want you to be able to stay here" lands very differently than "you're going to fall." Ask which parts of the house have become annoying rather than which have become dangerous — the answers are usually the same, and the framing preserves the person's standing in their own home.
